Darwin Shotokan Karate

Darwin, Northern Territory – The 2020 Inaugural Australian Karate Federation Northern Territory Open Championships was held on Saturday 21st November at Karama Primary School, Karama.


Approximately 30 keen karate-ka (students) from three local karate schools put their best foot forward in an attempt to claim supremacy and take the podium.

Dojos representing at this historic event include.

• Darwin Shotokan Karate

• Traditional Shotokan Karate Federation

• Darwin Jin Sei Ryu


Darwin Shotokan Karate dominated the event winning gold in 11 of the 15events contested.


Traditional Shotokan Karate Federation’s Ffion Jones Shodan (1st Dan) however did not disappoint winning her respective kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) convincingly.


Australian Karate Federation Northern Territory President and Chief Instructor of Darwin Shotokan Karate Mr Nikolas Karpathios said “It is fantastic we can bring Karate competition to the Northern Territory for the first time under the AKF banner the event was a huge success and we are looking forward to future events in 2021 including the National event to be held in Perth in August.”


The Australian Karate Federation is the officially recognised sporting organisation under Sport Australia and it is hoped that the Northern Territory will now be a permanent fixture on the national circuit.
